About Emma


Emma is a New York City-based mezzo-soprano and a recent graduate of the master’s of music in Voice degree at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts. She is also a graduate of Brown University, with a bachelor’s degree in Music and East Asian Studies. At Boston University, in addition to singing roles, Emma had two recitals, led services at BU Hillel, and worked in residence life. During her time at Brown, Emma was the president of Brown Opera Productions for two years, sang freelance and in concerts across campus, was on the board of the Fermata Composers’ Collective, worked as a tour guide and a teaching assistant in the Music Department, and took classes in four languages. Emma is the winner of three prizes: the David L Kneuss Award for vocal directing, the Hope Chatterton Prize for excellence in vocal performance, and the Margery MacColl Award for an exceptionally promising music concentrator.

With Boston University Opera Institute, Emma performed the roles of Older Woman in Jonathan Dove’s Flight, Susie in Jodi Goble’s The Eleanors, Ciesca in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and covered Lucinda in Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters. Previous credits include Claire in Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town and the Governor/Vanderdendur in Bernstein’s Candide, both with Brown Opera Productions in Providence, Rhode Island; and La Chouette/La Chauve-Souris/La Bergère in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges at Miami Music Festival. In addition, Emma has participated in numerous opera scenes programs, with Queens Summer Vocal Institute, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and Interlochen Arts Center.

Emma was also a fellowship recipient of the US Department of State’s Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (Parlamentarisches Patenschafts-Programm), during which she studied intensive German, took courses at the Universität des Saarlandes, and worked as a costumes intern at Oper Frankfurt.

In her free time, Emma likes keeping up her language study through making friends from all over the world, as well as running, petting dogs, singing in her Vietnamese cover band with bandmate Ben Youngwood, and making elaborate meals from scratch.
